Austin’s Original Tex-Mex Legend Since 1952

Step into South Lamar’s most storied dining room and you’re not just grabbing dinner—you’re stepping into a living piece of Austin history. What began in 1923 with a six-year-old Matt Martinez hustling tamales from a wooden pushcart near the Texas Capitol turned into the city’s first true Tex-Mex institution when Matt and his wife Janie opened the original El Rancho in 1952 (just 10 tables, zero employees, and Janie cooking everything from scratch).

Today, at 2613 S Lamar Blvd, the Martinez family still runs the show. Daughters Gloria, Cecilia, Cathy, and daughter-in-law Estella keep every tortilla, chip, and enchilada handmade the old way. The result? A bustling, no-frills landmark that serves 500+ happy guests daily and still feels like the heart of Austin.

Bold Flavors That Built a Legend

Order the Bob Armstrong Dip first. Creamy, beefy, and loaded with flavor. It set the standard for queso everywhere. Sizzling Angus fajitas hit the table with real drama. Cheese enchiladas and pork tamales taste exactly like the originals. Fresh guacamole and strong margaritas round it out. These recipes never changed. That consistency keeps locals hooked for decades.

Patio Nights and Private Party Magic

The patio shines on warm evenings. String lights and cold drinks set the mood. Live music pops up on special nights. Local bands add the perfect soundtrack. Need room for a group? They host private events, especially Tuesdays. Birthdays, reunions, and big feasts work great here. Great food plus easy vibes make every celebration feel right.

  1. I recently visited Matt’s El Rancho and had a great experience overall. The asadero tacos were cheesy and delicious, and I especially loved the flavor from the grilled onions—they added the perfect touch.

The chips could have used a little more salt, but the salsa made up for it with a nice kick that I really enjoyed. The margaritas were also a highlight—my husband and I added floaters on top, which took them to a 10/10.

Overall, a fun spot with flavorful food and great drinks!

  3. Fantastic place to get Tex-Mex. The brisket nachos were incredible but the quesadilla was by far the single greatest quesadilla I have ever had. Absolutely phenomenal. I have heard great things about Bob’s Queso, but I didn’t get to try it. Next time for sure (and you can bet there will be a next time even though I live across the country.
