South Lamar’s Farm-to-Table Pioneer

Odd Duck started in 2009 as a food trailer. Brothers Bryce and Dylan Gilmore rehabbed a Fleetwood Mallard and filled it with ingredients from nearby farms. They bought whole hogs and cooked snout to tail. The trailer became a local legend and helped put Austin’s small-plate scene on the map. The brick-and-mortar version now sits on South Lamar and carries that same spirit forward. Warm wood, plants, and big windows create a cozy yet lively space. Shared plates keep every table social and fun.

Seasonal Dishes Full of Texas Soul

The menu changes often and stays exciting. Redfish ceviche with watermelon aguachile wakes up the palate. Okra fritters and cast iron cornbread bring comfort with a creative edge. Wagyu cuts, fried quail, and blackened redfish show real range. Influences from Mexico to Thailand meet Texas ingredients in every bite. Desserts like strawberry cream puff close things on a sweet note. The food itself entertains without trying too hard.

Happy Hour Steals and Group Celebrations

Happy hour runs Sunday through Thursday from four thirty to five thirty. Twenty-five percent off select plates plus drink deals make it an easy win. The nine-dollar watermelon fresca hits just right. Large parties book through the inquiry system for milestone dinners or casual crew nights. The vibe stays relaxed and welcoming with lively bar energy. It is the spot for special occasions that still feel like South Lamar.

  1. The couple next to us was cleaning every plate!!! That’s when we knew we were about to be wowed! We ordered the cheddar cornbread and the onion butter had us wanting to eat every crumb. Next we had the summer salad and the antelope tataki. Both were equally unique and mouthwatering! We finished with the braised goat pizza and this is cooked in a wood fire oven and is absolutely amazing! My advice order everything!

  2. Odd Duck in Austin absolutely lives up to the hype.

From the second you walk in, the place has that perfect Austin energy. It feels upscale without being stiff, creative without trying too hard, and lively without being overwhelming. The atmosphere is warm, fun, and just cool enough to make you feel like you picked the right spot before the food even hits the table.

The staff was amazing from start to finish. Everyone we interacted with was kind, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. Not the fake polite kind of service either. The real kind. The kind where people seem like they actually enjoy being there and want you to enjoy being there too. That makes a huge difference, especially at a restaurant with food this good. Now the food. Top tier is the only way to put it.

I had the wagyu burger, and I am not exaggerating when I say it was life changing. Perfectly cooked, rich, juicy, layered with flavor, and somehow both elevated and comforting at the same time. Every bite tasted intentional. The bun, the patty, the crunch, the greens, the sauce, everything worked together like it had been engineered by someone who takes burgers way more seriously than most people take their careers. It was one of those meals where you take the first bite and immediately stop talking for a second because your brain needs to catch up.

Odd Duck is the kind of restaurant that makes dinner feel like an experience instead of just a meal. Great atmosphere, incredible service, and food that absolutely earns the reputation. Whether you’re visiting Austin or you live here and somehow haven’t gone yet, Odd Duck needs to be on your list.

I’ll definitely be back. And yes, I’ll probably be thinking about that wagyu burger until then. As well as how awesome Jason was and singing Little Mermaid at the bar with him!

  3. I loved this place! We came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday with the tasting menu, and it was such a great experience.

The service was amazing, the food was superb, and we genuinely had a wonderful time.

The patio was beautiful and had such a relaxed atmosphere—it was easy to have conversations and really enjoy the evening.

Everything felt fresh and thoughtfully prepared. You can tell they truly care about the quality of their ingredients and the intention behind each dish.

One of my fav Austin restaurants so far.

  4. Food is really good. Main portions are a little small, but the food is meant to share so 4-6 dishes for two people is optimal.
We loved the dishes we ordered. Our server was wonderful and very knowledgeable and attentive. He checked in on us often and gave very good food recommendations.
The whole experience was pretty great and we can’t wait to go back!

  5. Odd Duck had been on my list for a while since I’d gotten great feedback from friends that it was one of the best restaurants in Austin. Finally got to try it this weekend and it did not disappoint! Everything we ordered was delicious. Love that the menu changes every month based on what’s available locally. Portion size and prices were very fair and the service was great! Reservations are required. I will definitely be back!
