Dive Into the Stranger Side on 6th Street

Tucked inside the Lucky Lizard gift shop on historic 6th Street, the Museum of the Weird delivers exactly what its name promises. This modern dime museum in the P.T. Barnum tradition packs shrunken heads, the famous Fiji mermaid, mummies, two-headed creatures, and a Creature in Ice into one gloriously campy space. Paranormal fans will geek out over Bigfoot and UFO exhibits while monster lovers stare down wax figures and zombies. Admission gets you a free poster and endless stories to tell later.

Perfect Weird Detour for Any Austin Day

Museum of the Weird is open daily with later hours on weekends, it’s an easy, affordable stop whether you’re bar-hopping or just want something different from the usual downtown scene. The unpolished, playful vibe makes it feel like a sideshow that never left town. Kids and adults alike leave grinning (or slightly creeped out) after an hour of pure oddball entertainment. If you’re hunting the stranger side of Austin, this is ground zero.

  1. Such a cool spot to check out if you’re visiting Austin! Friendly and welcoming staff and very interesting exhibits! Thank y’all for the fun time

  2. Just go. It’s an inexpensive way to spend time in Austin and worth every penny. The exhibits are cool- lots of information. And if you don’t want to read everything- the models and specimens are more than enough. Super fun. We went for 1.5 hours to kill time before a show and are so glad we did. The wax museum was GORGEOUS. Photos here are only a drop in the bucket of what you will see. Staff friendly and has a neat gift shop.

  3. Austin is a challenging place to visit if you have younger kids, but this place is a lifesaver if you need to kill time and grab some AC with a 9 yr old in tow. The exhibits are presented in a 19th century, curio mystery/horror genre style and quite well curated. I’m a biologist by trade so the preserved exhibits were interesting (some probably hybridized by old-fashioned creative taxidermy, but you never know!). My daughter was excited, a little bit scared in places, but overall had a lot of fun. Well worth the visit.

  5. The Museum of the Weird is SO MUCH FUN!! I love finding weird and quirky places/things to do and this museum was perfect! It’s not super huge but the amount of interesting exhibits inside far exceeded my expectations! As a horror lover; the wax exhibits were my favorite part! The front staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming too! I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re in the area and looking for something fun to do!

  6. My daughter and I stopped by to check this place out and it was pretty neat!

It was quirky and its vibe was classic horror meets carnival side show meets Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

We really enjoyed taking this self-guided tour…there was something new and freaky around every corner.

    Stay weird!

  8. Ignore the 1 Star Reviews. It’s called the Museum of the Weird…there’s going to be weird stuff. If you leave a one star review because you got freaked out then you should probably keep your opinions to yourself.

When we went the wax museum was under construction so the $12 was a little steep in my opinion but would have been worth it had we been able to go upstairs. The museum seems small and short but that there is so much stuff to read that you can spend an hour in there easy.

The psychic was really into the museum and answered all the screw ball questions our group had. His performance was pretty outstanding, in my opinion.

The gift shop was by far the best part for me. All sorts of odd ball nick-knacks that are usually super hard to find. And of course the staff were all INCREDIBLY friendly and super in to their jobs!

  9. Many people will look at this place, and already dislike it off the bat due to the small size of it. Sure, it’s a tiny museum smack dab in the center of downtown Austin, but you must try it. Admission is about $11 per person, but it will be worth it. Hear me out.

You can walk in, and there’s a hallway with mutant animals, objects, and all this other random stuff that is interesting to observe. Sheep on the wall, other bodies on farm animals’ heads, and many other ridiculous things to feast your eyes upon. Not only that, there’s a separate side show where they take you behind the scenes of the museum. There’s even a room where Johnny Depp used to stay in when he was recording some movies around Austin.

In the last room of this separate tour, there’s a prehistoric ice person that is sort of like a caveman buried in a thick layer of ice. You can even get your pictures taken in a King Kong set, or act like you’re being attacked by Big Foot. So, don’t be fooled by the size of this place. Come on in and spend an hour looking at some of the most random things you’ll ever see!

  10. The guided tour part was the best! Our guide was well versed on everything and funny! The perfect showman! The show at the end was entertaining and I’d go back again just for him!

  11. Super cool museum, my kids loved it. The people who work here are so friendly and helpful!! Not only were they great with my kids they made all the stories super engaging. If your kids like mysteries, a little spooky, the Weird TX book this is for them. Probably ages 10 and up, but as a mom I loved it too. Great fun
