Live Music: Seth James

Seth James is one of Texas’ most respected blues and roots musicians, known for blending blues, soul, Southern rock, R&B, and Americana into a sound that is both deeply traditional and distinctly modern.

Although he performs throughout the country, James has long been associated with the Austin music scene, where his powerful vocals, expressive guitar playing, and authentic songwriting have earned him a loyal following.

Raised in Texas, James began building his reputation on the regional blues circuit before breaking through nationally with his 2009 solo album That Kind of Man.

In 2010, he co-founded the acclaimed roots-rock band The Departed with Cody Canada, helping introduce his music to a wider audience. After recording and touring with the band, James returned to his solo career to focus on the blues, soul, and roots music that had shaped him from the beginning.

James has drawn praise from some of the biggest names in American roots music. Delbert McClinton has called him “one of the most important vocalists” working today, while songwriter Glen Clark has praised his unmistakable “Texas soul.”

His music combines gritty blues guitar with soulful vocals, sharp songwriting, and influences ranging from Memphis R&B to Texas swing and gospel.
